The Head of Department for the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), Mr Relebohile Mofokane, today officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony and official opening of the new Shoprite USave store in Mocoseng Village, alongside Kgosana Goitshasiwang Molema from Barolong Boo RraTshidi, Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo, local traditional leadership, community stakeholders, and representatives from Shoprite Holdings.
The opening of the retail store marks a significant milestone in advancing local economic development and improving access to affordable retail services for communities in and around Mocoseng Village. The investment is expected to contribute meaningfully towards job creation, stimulate economic activity, and create opportunities for local suppliers and entrepreneurs.
Speaking during the official opening, Mr Mofokane described the investment as a demonstration of confidence in rural economies and the potential that exists within local communities.
“This is more than just the opening of a retail store; it is a celebration of resilience, vision, and community empowerment. The establishment of this Shoprite USave represents hope and economic progress for the people of Mocoseng and surrounding villages,” said Mr Mofokane.
He commended Mr Tlhoriso Phallo, owner of the Shoprite USave store, for his determination and entrepreneurial spirit, highlighting that Mr Phallo was born and raised within the local community.
Mr Mofokane said the investment would not only improve access to essential goods and services closer to residents, particularly elderly people who often travel long distances to town for necessities but would also create a platform for the growth of local producers and small businesses.
He further indicated that the department would engage with Mr Phallo and Shoprite management to explore opportunities for local entrepreneurs to access shelf space within the store to market and sell locally produced goods.
“This initiative will provide emerging businesses with much-needed market access and contribute towards the growth and sustainability of local enterprises,” he said.
Mr Phallo expressed appreciation to the department for assisting him with business licensing processes and compliance requirements, as well as to Shoprite Holdings for providing an opportunity that will positively impact the community.
“I am grateful for the support received from all stakeholders throughout this journey. This business is not only benefiting the community through improved access to affordable goods, but it has also created fourteen (14) employment opportunities for local people who can now support their families,” said Mr Phallo.
Representing Shoprite Holdings, Mr Jaco Jordaan said the company remains committed to serving the needs of the local community and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the store. “Transport costs remain a major challenge for many rural communities. Bringing quality and affordable retail services closer to the people adds real value to the lives of residents and contributes towards local economic development,” said Jordaan.
The department’s participation in the official opening reaffirms the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment, supporting private sector growth, and improving the livelihoods of communities through impactful economic development initiatives.
